MIDLAND, Texas - Police fatally shot a man who broke a store window after a domestic disturbance and fled from them with a knife in his hand.

Patrick Calanchi, 28, died shortly before 1 p.m. Saturday following an argument with his common-law wife.

The two officers who shot him, Chris Earp and Tye Box, were placed on administrative leave, a normal step after an officer-involved shooting. Midland police will do an internal investigation and the Texas Rangers will conduct a separate investigation, according a statement by Midland police.

Officers were responding to a domestic disturbance call at a motel when they encountered Calanchi holding a knife in the parking lot. He ran into an antique store and placed the knife at his own throat. Officers followed and four people inside the store went into a back room, remaining unharmed, according to police.

Inside the store, one officer fired at Calanchi with a non-lethal weapon that shoots beanbags and another shot a sage gun that releases a rubber projectile. Calanchi then threw an object through the store window and ran through the glass. That's when Earp and Box then fired at Calanchi, one officer used his duty weapon and another shot a rifle, a police statement said.
